WASTE DISPOSAL

Waste is disposed in a landfill, that is the place where un-recyclable or unreusable waste is usually taken.

THE LANDFILL

It should be specified that the planning of a landfill is fundamental, because it has to receive inert, hazardous and non-hazardous waste and it has a limited life-span. For this reason, it cannot receive more than a certain amount of waste.

Landfills have to be provided with a geological barrier, so as to isolate waste from the ground, comply with hygienic standards and protect the biosphere.

Environmental pollution can be highly reduced by using the compostable fraction of waste to produce biogas, which can be employed as soil fertilizer and as fuel to produce energy.
